HELPING WHERE HELP IS NEEDED

L.I.T. SUPPORTS ELVIS AG'S DONATION CAMPAIGN

While attending primary school is part of everyday life for children in Germany, the situation is more difficult in other countries. In East African Tanzania, for example, only 18 public primary schools are available for nearly 26,000 children. The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that many buildings are dilapidated and inadequately equipped, have poor sanitary facilities, and lack sufficient desks and books. Furthermore, there is a shortage of teaching staff.

An example is the Kagonda Primary School in the Izigo region. Nearly 500 children attend school there, 78 of whom have physical or mental disabilities. With only eight classrooms, which are also not disabled-friendly, the conditions are more than poor. In addition, only 152 desks provide space for learning. To improve the situation and facilitate access to education for the boys and girls on site, the Europäischer Ladungs-Verbund Internationaler Spediteure AG (elvis) is collecting donations for this primary school in its annual campaign.

Three disabled-friendly classrooms, each with 60 desks and six bookshelves, are planned. In addition to the construction measures, training for the school committee and local teachers is also on the agenda. They are to be sensitized to child protection. As a sustainable transport and logistics company, it is important to us to assume social responsibility, and we are once again supporting this campaign this year. "In Tanzania, not all residents have access to educational institutions – and those available are often inadequately equipped.", explains Fokke Fels, CEO of L.I.T. AG, regarding the background.

The project, which was financed with our donation and that of other elvis members in 2018, has just been successfully completed. A maternity ward has been built in Tanzania, improving healthcare for women and newborns. At the same time, qualified specialists have informed the locals about topics such as family planning and newborn health.
