WE ARE WHAT WE DO

L.I.T. AND THE »RUDI-ROTBEIN-CLUB«
MANAGE THEIR OWN TRADITIONAL ORCHARD

Together for people and nature: Under this motto, the Naturschutzbund Deutschland e.V. (NABU) inspires many people. For more than a hundred years, the association has been committed to preserving our nature. Our environment is also very important to us. Therefore, we support the »Rudi-Rotbein-Club« of the NABU Wesermarsch district group in establishing and maintaining a traditional orchard.

Traditional orchards are among the most endangered biotopes in Central Europe. Monocultures, development, coniferous trees, or fallowing are reasons for the sharp decline in ecological fruit growing. However, it offers a habitat for a diverse animal world. Together with the children's and youth group of NABU Wesermarsch, we have set an example for rethinking and created a traditional orchard on a 1.4-hectare area. 30 fruit trees stand on the meadow near Elsfleth in Wesermarsch – various varieties, age and size classes, high-stemmed and widely scattered across the landscape, as is characteristic for a traditional orchard. The trees bear apples, pears, cherries, plums, or walnuts, while the meadow is used as pastureland. Nesting aids for birds were also installed, and two bee colonies were settled. In short: The environmental project launched in 2014 is a complete success. But what is it all for?

NATURE CONSERVATION RIGHT ON OUR DOORSTEP

It is important to us that we advocate for biodiversity, the protection of intact habitats, for good air, clean water, healthy soils, and the careful use of our finite resources. »If we can inspire even the youngest ones for nature conservation, that is a great thing,« says Fokke Fels, Chairman of the Board of L.I.T. AG. On the L.I.T.-owned traditional orchard, the children can immediately put their motto into action and learn not only about the ecological significance of traditional orchards but also, and especially, about the local animal and plant world.

For Central European biodiversity, traditional orchards play an outstanding role with over 5,000 animal and plant species and over 3,000 fruit varieties. In particular, the Little Owl, Wryneck, and Green Woodpecker are at home there, as are many insects or spiders. The regional connection particularly pleases Fels. As a logistics service provider operating throughout Europe, we recognize our responsibility. »Our activities have an impact on the environment, and this must be compensated for,« says the Chairman of the Board of L.I.T. AG. Through this small but significant project, we want to start with nature conservation right on our doorstep. And we hope for imitators.
